SUMMARY

Oscillation of sea level during the end of Late Pleistocene - Holocene
in the South Trung Bộ sea area

Nguyễn Văn Bách, Nguyễn Tiến Hải, Nguyễn Huy Phúc

During the Quaternary period, the coastal zone of the South Central Việt Nam was influenced by transgressive and regressive cycles. The region had been covered by sea in the transgression (sediment deposition) and became land in regression, affected by weathering and erosion processes.

In the studied area, the sea-level lowered to about 70-110 m at the end of Late Pleistocene (in comparision with the present sea-level). After the Flandrian transgression, the sea-level lowered a little and then rose again to the present level.

The sea-level fluctuations began in the Late Pleistocene until Holocene expressed distinctly through the sedimentary characteristics, surface sedimentary facies (0-10 m) at the sea bottom of the investigated area and characteristics of surface boundaries between sedimentary layers.
