SUMMARY

The distributive characteristics of PCBs and OCPs compounds  in the Mỹ Thạnh estuarine areas

According to WHO, over 1,000 pesticides have been used so far, with many different chemical compositions. In particular, organochlorines (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been attracting scientists in the world, due to their high bio-accumulation and toxicity for human, wild-life species and adverse impacts on eco-systems.

Owing to their high stability, PCBs and OCPs compounds are accumulated in different marine environments (sediments, waters, organisms, ...) and they were mostly derived from continents. Therefore, investigation and monitoring programs have been implemented by world-wide scientific institutes, in order to evaluate the distribution and accumulation of these organic compounds in sediments of coastal areas.

This article is aimed to set forth distribution chacacteristics of PCBs and OCPs compounds in sediments of the Mỹ Thạnh estuarine areas, then to suggest reasonable recommendations and solutions for preventing environmental pollution and negative impacts on ecosystems. This is a part of outcomes of the Project: “Survey and assessment of mineral resource potential in coastal areas of Sóc Trăng Province at 1:100,000 scale”.
