The determination of the nature of intraplate deformation
and active displacement, that could take place along the major faults under the
action of regional stress field, plays an important role in the zoning and
forecasting earthquake, as well as related natural hazards. A new approach,
which was recently developed in the field of earthquake prediction, has been
applied to study fault activities in this paper. The approach is based on the
evaluation and calculating relations between regional stress field with
parameters that describe the geometry and kinematics of 15 fault segments within
the West Bắc Bộ region. The calculation allows us to characterize the variation
of stress in space and the relative displacement components along the NS, EW and
vertical directions in the whole studied area with dimension of 300x300 km2
centered at Sơn La town. Predictable focal mechanisms have been also calculated
for different localities along fault segments, as well as at any point located
inside the area under investigation.
This research has demonstrated that this approach can be
applied to solve the problem of zoning in detail and to predict natural hazards
like earthquake as well as soil cracking in the country.
