Characteristics of tectonic fractures, fault activities and geodynamic situation of the Côn Đảo Archipelago

The Côn Đảo Archipelago is located about one hundred km from the mainland. The fault activities, tectonic fractures and geodynamic situation of this area remain noticeable problems.

Our analysis of new data from a recent field trip to these islands show that the tectonic fracturing and fault activities of this area are quite complicated.

The tectonic fractures and fault zones can be grouped into 4 systems: sub-longitudinal, sub-latitudinal, NE-SW and NW-SE. The NW-SE striking fault system show a domination of right lateral displacement, while the NE-SW faults show left lateral displacement.

The geodynamic evolution of the region has undergone 4 compression phases: sub-longitudinal, sub-latitudinal, NE-SW and NW-SE, among them the sub-longitudinal phase is dominant and the latest.
