Based on the
updated seismic, magnetic and gravity data on the Việt Nam Continental
Shelf, the Tertiary sedimentary basins, namely Sông Hồng, Phú Khánh, Hoàng
Sa, Cửu Long, Nam Côn Sơn, Tư Chính - Vũng Mây,
Trường Sa and Malay - Thổ Chu, have been clearly specified. Geostructural and
stratigraphic analyses show that these basins were formed in Paleogene and
mainly controlled by Oligocene-Miocene extrusion and the East Sea
floor spreading. These two factors interacted with each other. The different
shapes of the East Việt Nam Tertiary basins in the East of Việt Nam
were due to specific geodynamic factors of each area. The Eocene-Oligocene
sediments were deposited mainly in the delta plain and lacustrine environments
near the supply sources, playing an important role as the source rocks. The
Miocene and younger sediments were formed in depositional environment ranging
from delta plain in the West to shallow and deep sea in the East. The petroleum
systems of the basins and areas have been accurately identified by updated high-quality
data with advanced technologies and studying methods. These studies have
provided good results and maps which ensure sufficient reliability for studying and
delineating prospective areas and assessing hydrocarbon potential, meeting the
requirements for planning and management of marine resources and environment in the coming years and
long-term future.
