of the Middle-Upper Holocene Formation distributed in the Mekong Delta for the road construction

This article introduces the engineering geological characteristics of soft and very soft clay soils belonging to the Middle-Upper Holocene Formation (amQII2-3) distributed in the Mekong Delta. The results  show that very soft clay and sandy clay have a thickness of about 10 m, in some places, 20 m. The principal clay minerals are kaolinite, illite and  montmorillonite; the salt content in the soil is from 0.25 to 2.28%, organic matter is up to 10%. Properties of engineering geology are unfavourable for road construction: high porosity, low density, high compressibility and very low shearing resistance strength. For the road construction on this soil, ground improvement are applicable. It is not good for improvement by using mixing additives, such as lime and cement. Ground improvement by using vertical drain and by additives of other materials can be used.
