Abstract: In addition to many cultural and
biodiversity heritage values, the Cát Bà Archipelago and its vicinity (Hải Pḥng City)
are promising in terms of its geoheritage potential. Apart from the
geomorphologically universal outstanding value, thanks to which the Hạ
Long Bay was recognized as World Natural Heritage, and the Cát Bà Archipelago,
a part of Hạ Long Bay, bears many geoheritage types of paleontological,
stratigraphical and tectonic-structural characters. Nearly 150 geosites were
surveyed, assessed, classified and ranked, but only some of which are briefly
introduced. The authors of the state-funded research project coded KC.08.20
“Study of geoheritage potential and recommendation for geopark establishment in
some areas of North Việt Nam”
recommend setting up the Cát Bà Archipelago Geopark, consisting of the
archipelago itself and some “satellite areas” like Đồ Sơn
Peninsular, Voi-Xuân Sơn Mountains,
Long Châu Archipelago and Bạch Long Vĩ Island.
The other objective is to gain the tittle of Global Geopark, which will
contribute to the integrated conservation and use of all types of heritage
values, including geoheritage, by a much-needed comprehensive master plan and
management support system.
