The Mã River Delta is the third largest in Vietnam after the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta. The Mã River begins from Điện Biên province through Laos to Thanh Hóa province and pours into the sea at the northeastern coastal districts of Thanh Hóa province. The Mã River flows into the sea through four river mouths, the largest ones is the Hoi river mouth, where happen many fluctuations by river activities as well as the exploitation and irrigation works by human. Based on the interpretation of remote sensing image data i.e. Landsat MSS, TM, ETM, OLI and UTM topographic maps from 1965 to 2017, the variation maps of 5 periods (1965-1975, 1975-1990, 1990-2001, 2001-2009, 2009-2017) and the spatial variation maps of the Hới river mouth area (1965-2017) were developed. In general, the Mã River mouth has many complicated variations. From 1965 until now, the river mouth has tended to move towards the sea and expanded the most in the period 1975-1990.
